String Theory: Invert brings its version of chamber music to the 14-Karat Cabaret

As its name suggests, the New York-based ensemble Invert specializes in overturning assumptions--in its case, about chamber music. A string quartet that doesn't call itself a string quartet, Invert boasts two cellists (including former Baltimorean Steve Berson) instead of two violinists, and it composes its own repertoire from a blend of influences that ranges well outside the classical canon (see Berson's swinging, noir-ish "Theme [for a Black Collar Crime]" or fellow cellist Chris George's urgent, lyrical "Number 1" on the quartet's self-titled CD). And what could be a more appropriate local chamber for such sublime chamber-music subversion than the 14-Karat Cabaret, where Invert plays tonight? (LG)
